91 Express Lanes Weekend Closures Planned

Delays are expected on the SR-91 for 10 consecutive weekends starting Sept. 9 as crews repave express lanes

ORANGE – Beginning Sept. 9, drivers may experience significant weekend traffic delays on the Riverside (SR- 91) Freeway for 10 consecutive weekends while crews close the 91 Express Lanes to replace the asphalt.

The 91 Weekend Shift will result in five weekend closures of the 91 Express Lanes in the eastbound direction from 11 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, with rolling closures of the regular lane closest to the express lanes. The lanes will then be closed for five weekends in the westbound direction, from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday.

Drivers are asked to plan ahead, use alternate routes such as the SR-57, SR-60 and I-10, and avoid the area if possible because travel times could be double or more of what is typical for weekend traffic.

The 91 Express Lanes is traveled by more than 12 million drivers every year and it’s vital that this pavement work is completed to maintain the safety and efficiency of the lanes. Asphalt on highways in Southern California needs to be replaced approximately every 20 years and the 91 Express Lanes has not been repaved since its opening in 1995.

People are encouraged to share the closure information with family and friends and to remind others about the scheduled closures.

Eastbound closures are scheduled for 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.:

  • Sept. 9 – 12
  • Sept. 16 – 19
  • Sept. 23 – 26
  • Sept. 30 – Oct. 3
  • Oct. 7 – 10

Westbound closures are scheduled for 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.:

  • Oct. 14 – 17
  • Oct. 21 – 24
  • Oct. 28 – 31
  • Nov. 4 – 7
  • Nov. 18 – 21

The schedule is subject to change and drivers are encouraged to look for construction updates at octa.net/91weekendshift.

Funding for the $24.4 million project comes from money set aside from tolls paid by drivers of the 91 Express Lanes. No taxpayer dollars are being used to fund the project.

In addition to the pavement work, the project includes replacing six changeable message signs, restriping, replacing channelizers, completing electrical work and replacing pavement markers. The entire project is expected to be completed by January 2017.

The 91 Express Lanes is a four-lane, 10-mile toll facility located between SR-55 and the county’s border with Corona in Riverside County.
