Mission Viejo City Council candidate William Barker died Monday night, the Orange County Register is reporting.

Barker, 72, was one of 11 candidates competing for three open council seats. Incumbents Trish Kelley and Dave Leckness are hoping to be re-elected, and Councilman John Paul Ledesma is termed out.

Barker’s name appears on today’s citywide ballot, and in case he is elected, council members could appoint someone to fill his seat or call for a special election, according to the Register.

We’ll let you know what happens next.
