On PBS SoCaL, we delve into Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich’s waffling over a deciding vote she cast to speed up the payment timeline at Orange County’s public pension plan.

It all comes against a backdrop of how to deal with the county’s more than $5 billion of unfunded pension liability, with some arguing for 30-year amortization schedules to be sped up to 15 years. Others have said that would drastically cut public services and risk bankruptcy for some cities.

We also discuss:

  • A lawsuit by military reservist Robert Ervais alleging that his service has cost him career promotions at the county counsel’s office in violation of federal and state law.

  • An ongoing mystery over how much money OC Republican Party Chairman Scott Baugh’s company made at a Costa Mesa city event.
  • Two Costa Mesa council members suing the city’s police union for allegedly allowing its law firm to try to harass Mayor Jim Righeimer.

Voice of OC’s weekly news segments are broadcast on PBS SoCaL Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 p.m.
