Voting Rights Plaintiff Rickk Montoya Congratulates Garden Grove City Council on Historic Vote
Garden Grove, CA East Garden Grove resident and Voting Rights supporter Rickk Montoya congratulated the Garden Grove City Council on its historic vote Tuesday Night. The City Council voted unanimously on a new districting map that will implement by-district elections in the city. In November, four councilmembers will be elected from within the new districts, the mayor will still be elected at-large.
“I want to congratulate the Garden Grove City Council on implementing by-district elections in Garden Grove,” Rickk said. “This historic vote will allow residents to select councilmembers who are from their communities and allow neighborhoods to receive direct representation. This is a victory for disenfranchised neighborhoods on the East end, who will now for the first time be able to elect a representative of their choice.”
The new district map, officially known as “Public Submission 1” was drawn by Kim Nguyen, an Eastern Garden Grove resident and alumnus of Santiago High School. The map received overwhelming support from the community and voting rights organizations and brought both the Vietnamese and Latino communities together. Districts 2 and 3 in Central and Northern Garden Grove were chosen by the council to be up in November in addition to Districts 5 and 6 which are both in Eastern Garden Grove.
“It took great effort and a lot of hard work from many individuals to get us here, but I am very proud that we have a map to move forward with and that the council voted unanimously to pass it. This is a historic day for our communities and I am proud to be a resident of Eastern Garden Grove. Although I believe district elections will make our city stronger, at the end of the day we are all still one city and one Garden Grove.”
