Doug Applegate

Colonel Doug Applegate

Editor’s Note: This biography was provided by the candidate’s office.

Marine Colonel Doug Applegate has the right profile to represent California’s 49th District in Congress. Doug grew up in a solidly working-class neighborhood just outside of Dayton, Ohio and was the first Applegate of his family to attend college.

In 1974, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps officer program, just a few months before the fall of Saigon. Initially, Doug served as an Infantry Officer and then went on to become a Judge Advocate. From there, Doug has had a successful career as both a small business owner and a trial attorney, while continuing to serve his country in the Marine Corps with a combat deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Ramadi, Baghdad, and Fallujah.

He retired from the Marine Corps in 2006 after 32 years of active and reserve service. Doug has lived and worked in the 49th Congressional District for over 30 years and raised his family here. In 2016 Doug ran against entrenched incumbent Darrell Issa, and came within 1,621 votes of beating the richest man in Congress. Doug immediately signed up to run again in 2018, vowing to finish the job he started and give the 49th the representation it truly deserves.
