After two council members – Farrah Khan and Anthony Kuo – publicly sponsor a proposal to discuss disciplining or firing City Manager John Russo in closed session, the effort falls apart on the city council dais with a majority of the council publicly backing Russo.
A recall petition was filed in Irvine last week against Mayor Christina Shea and Councilmember Mike Carroll alleging they are too friendly with developers. The recall is being led by Kev Abazajian, a professor at UC Irvine and former city council candidate, and Steve Berger, a lawyer who has lived in Irvine for four decades.
Several Democrats are challenging First District County Supervisor Andrew Do. Meanwhile, Third District County Supervisor Don Wagner has drawn a sole challenger, Asheigh Aitken – who lost a close battle for Anaheim’s Mayor’s seat last year.
City Council members voted but it’s ultimately homeowners in the Great Park neighborhood who will fund the stadium, estimated by the local developer at about $200 a month for each homeowner. Officials have apparently been privately discussing the plan for several years. Great Park developer, Five Point Holdings, is scheduled to come back with a plan for public review in February.

Stars of the ballet world will join Skylar Campbell in creating a new dance company – what they are currently referring to as a collective – which will premiere their work together for the first time in Orange County in June 2020 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.
