We believe the most important news stories leave a lasting impact — whether that means holding the powerful accountable or shining a spotlight on injustice. Our founding principle remains true: to offer timely and useful information about the community, to fuel civic participation and debate.

Voice of OC is creating a new ecosystem for news while serving a critical role in American civic life.

News deserts continue to expand across the nation as journalists are laid off and those remaining are focused more and more on regional and national stories that attract wide audiences.

The topics Voice of OC focuses on — government news, quality of life stories about cities and communities, arts and culture — are the same topics abandoned by large media as advertiser dollars are pursued.

News nonprofits like Voice of OC are setting a strong course toward community engagement and collaboration. We employ an educated, experienced and diverse group of journalists who collaborate day in day out to bring you the informative stories you need in order to participate in and engage with your community.

How citizens support a free press in our democracy is one of the great challenges of our time. We embrace that challenge as we fight to make sure you have independent, credible news. With your support we can forge a new kind of news: independent, inclusive, nonprofit and nonpartisan.

Right now is your last chance go give during our year-end fundraiser during which your donation will be tripled through the national NewsMatch fund supporting independent journalism and a local matching fund.

And remember,

•     Every person who gives before Dec. 31 will receive a special-edition VOC silver enamel pin.

•     Each person who gives $20 monthly will receive a New York Times digital subscription.

•     If you give $84 monthly or $1,000 a year you will be part of the exclusive VOC Ambassadors program including invitations to special events. With gratitude,

Sonya QuickDigital Editor, Voice of OC
