Stanton residents could enjoy a cooler library this summer.

The Stanton Library, which has been closed since October 2024, is set to reopen with a new HVAC system according to Orange County Public Libraries (OCPL) officials.

More than $875,000 was spent on renovating the branch, according to Danilo Seranilla, Orange County Public Libraries spokesperson.

The Stanton Library’s reopening is set for 10 a.m. on June 3, according to Seranilla.

The Stanton Library project involved replacing HVAC systems, doors and windows. The branch’s interior space was also refreshed and new shelving was added.

“These updates aim to create a more comfortable and modern environment for the community,” said Seranilla in an email with Voice of OC

“It’s so, so important that we invest in our public library infrastructure, and that includes refreshing and updating library spaces,” said Dr. Thuy Vo Dang, professor of information studies and Asian American studies at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

“Libraries are third places or third spaces that get folks away from home and from work, where they’re able to gather and build community and have access to resources. Design of the space is so crucial for how we welcome the community into public libraries.”

Dr. Vo Dang notes that these spaces are important for working class families.

“There’s a renewed interest right now in investing in and building up these third places so that marginalized individuals with kids, who don’t have stable Wi-Fi at home, or those without childcare, can go and find a stable and safe environment for their family within the library where they can get help with voter registration and tax documents, or access other essential information,” said Dr. Vo Dang, who is also an Orange County resident.

Two more branches within the county library system are expected to reopen soon.

The Dana Point Library does not currently have a set opening date, but is on track for a late spring reopening, according to Seranilla.
