Voters in an eastern part of Orange County and a large chunk of Riverside county will determine who the front runners are to represent the newly drawn 40th congressional district in a race that puts two established Republican congress members against each other.

Early election night results Tuesday night showed Republican Congressman Ken Calvert was in the lead with 35% of the vote ahead of Republican Congresswoman Young Kim who had  20% of the vote – a difference of over 15,100 votes.

Democrat Esther Kim-Yaret was trailing behind Kim by over 4,000 votes.

So far, over 100,000 votes have been tallied.

The newly formed district under Prop. 50 covers large chunks of Riverside County including Corona, Lake Elsinore and Murrieta and some parts of Orange County like Anaheim Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo.
