My story this week on redevelopment delved into how changes in redevelopment law might have killed the chances of the Laguna Hills mall getting a facelift.

Laguna Hills Assistant City Manager Don White disputed that notion. In fact, he said, the property owner, Simon Property Group, has plans to renovate the mall.

White said he wasn’t sure what the renovation would look like because Simon has those details under wraps. But he did say that it would probably involve some combining of store spaces and that Simon is probably letting some of the restaurant spaces in the food court remain empty to make way for future renovation.

But that is not what Simon says. The company sent Voice of OC a statement saying it has no such plans in the “near future.”

Here is the statement, sent to us by Simon’s public relations firm, Curator:

There are no current plans to redevelop Laguna Hills Mall or The Shops at Mission Viejo in the near future. However, we are continually evaluating the experience we offer our shoppers and focused on bringing in exciting, new retailers and convenient amenities at both properties to keep the shopping experience fresh and new.
