Topping this week’s public meeting agendas is a special closed session of the Santa Ana City Council to discuss labor negotiations.
The city is facing a budget deficit that could climb to $30 million if drastic measures aren’t taken to narrow the gap between revenues and expenditures. It’s no secret that council members will be asking labor groups to make painful concessions.
The Westminster City Council is set to consider redevelopment assistance for Best Buy, which may close its store in the city. To encourage Best Buy to keep the store open, council members may approve redevelopment grant funds for energy efficiency upgrades and sales tax rebates for up to $1.3 million over 10 years.

- Discussion of labor negotiations.
Westminster City Council Wednesday, Sept. 28
- Redevelopment funds for a Best Buy store in the city in the form of energy-efficiency upgrades and sales tax rebates to encourage the store to remain open.
- Charging members of the public for emergency responses when they were driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Irvine City Council Tuesday, Sept. 27
- A zone change to allow development of 48 single-family homes at the site of the former Alderwood Basics Elementary School.
- Renaming Alton Athletic Park after Army Lt. Mark Daily, a 23-year-old soldier who was killed in Iraq.
- A $1,800 grant to the Orange County Korean Cultural Center.
- Extending a sole-source contract with Great Park architect Ken Smith for one additional year at $120,000.
Anaheim City Council Tuesday, Sept. 27
- A zone change to permit 13 single-family residential units on Ball Road.
- A zone overlay change to allow multifamily affordable housing in the central and western areas of the city.
- Permit parking only rules on Rose Street between Wilhelmina and Sycamore streets.
- New agreements and extention of old agreements with 12 towing companies for police department towing services.
- A master agreement with 21 firms for electrical engineering consulting services on an as-needed basis.
- A master agreement with 30 consulting firms for civil engineering services on an as-needed basis.
Newport Beach City Council Tuesday, Sept. 27
- A study session regarding City Council redistricting.
- Agreements with the Planning Center for environmental services for the Koll Center Newport and Uptown Newport Village mixed-use developments.
- An amendment to the city manager’s employment contract increasing the city manager’s retirement contribution and reducing other compensation benefits.
Closed Session
- Discussing existing litigation involving two cases: MORN v. Newport Beach and Morningside Recovery LLC v. Newport Beach.
- Discussing anticipated litigation involving a fallen eucalyptus tree incident and another unspecified matter.
- Labor negotiations.
