Among the items on Orange County’s city council agendas this week, the Irvine City Council will consider requesting more stringent conditions for the relicensing of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, and Yorba Linda is set to decide whether to stop having Brea Police Department patrol its streets.
The question in Irvine is whether to issue a letter to federal regulators expressing concern about the recent radiation leak at San Onofre and asking that the plant find a way to store its spent nuclear fuel off-site before being relicensed.
It also calls for a review of seismic and tsunami risks, as well as security and fuel storage issues, during the plant’s relicensing process.
Councilman Larry Agran has been outspoken in his worries about the plant, which has been shut down for more than two months while officials investigate a small radiation leak.
In Yorba Linda, city leaders will determine Tuesday whether to stick with the Brea Police Department as its law enforcement agency or start negotiations with the Anaheim Police Department or the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The city says it’s considering the other agencies in order to cut costs.
And Rancho Santa Margarita appears close to appointing a city manager, with a rapid-fire series of meetings over the weekend and on Wednesday. The City Council will be discussing negations over the new city manager’s contract.
