Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido’s campaign this week announced an endorsement from U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein for reelection. Meanwhile, his competitor, Councilman David Benavides, announced an endorsement from Lt. Governor Gavin Newsome.

“As a former mayor myself, I know how challenging it can be to lead a city, balance budgets and serve the people,” Lt. Gov. Newsom, who served as mayor of San Francisco for eight years, stated in a news release. “David shares my belief that public service means serving the public, working tirelessly to meet the needs of residents, and having the vision to build for the future.”

The news release announcing Feinstein’s endorsement did not quote the senator.

Benavides is perhaps the most competitive challenger seeking to unseat Pulido since the mayor was first elected. Pulido, an 18-year incumbent, is running for his 10th term as mayor.
