The Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education Tuesday unanimously appointed a retired teacher, Theresa Rocco, to fill a vacancy left by former Trustee Bao Nguyen, who was sworn-in as the city’s mayor in December.

Rocco, who retired from the district last year, taught bilingual students and later supervised the district’s parent and community outreach, according to a district press release.

Unless a petition calling for a special election is filed to the county Superintendent within 30 days of Rocco’s appointment, she will hold the seat until the 2016 election.
