Westminster Mayor Tri Ta and councilman Tyler Diep are proposing the renaming of two street signs in front of the Asian Garden Mall.

The proposal would change two street signs for the Asian Garden Mall and Cultural Court off Bolsa Avenue to read “Saigon.”

The Asian Garden Mall and Cultural Court shopping center, early projects of Little Saigon developer Frank Jao, have been criticized for being generically “Asian” with Chinese-influenced motifs rather than having a distinctly Vietnamese cultural identity.

In 1996, Jao sought to build a bridge connecting the two projects, but faced heavy opposition from community activists protesting the project’s design.

Ta and Diep are proposing the change in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Black April, a historic date observed by many Vietnamese refugees in remembrance of the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.

Wednesday’s city council meeting starts at 7:00 pm. Read the full agenda here.
