More than 4,000 AUHSD Students Prepare for the Second Annual Servathon on January 18 Honoring MLK National Day of Service

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, January 12, 2016—More than 4,000 Anaheim Union students are poised to participate in the second annual AUHSD Servathon on Monday, January 18, 2016, coinciding with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday and National Day of Service.

The Servathon is a fundraiser similar to a jogathon, but instead of getting sponsors for laps, participants get sponsors for hours of community service. Students will be raising money while accomplishing more than 130 different service projects.

The projects, which range from the traditional, such as campus or beach cleanups, to the less customary, such as helping senior citizens with technology needs, are designed to give students experiences that will better connect them with neighborhoods, businesses, the elderly, and younger students.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of our students for using their education to serve the community,” said Superintendent Michael B. Matsuda, who proposed the idea of a District-wide Servathon, and is gratified by how enthusiastically students have embraced the concept.

The Servathon’s goal is to create a funding source for scholarships administered through the AUHSD Foundation, and to continue funding student-administered learning grants through the AUHSD Student Service Foundation.
