Rush: Tolerance and Free Speech in Newport Beach

I caught a recent story in a competing publication (Wall Street Journal) reporting on a survey conducted of Yale University students testing their opinion on the value of free speech.

Yale is hardly a bastion of right-wing thought.  It’s one of America’s most prestigious and liberal institutions.

I was mildly surprised to learn that 72% of the students “opposed speech codes to regulate speech for students and faculty” while 16% favored the idea.

Juxtapose this on the intolerant few that want to recall Newport Beach City Councilman Scott Peotter.

Peotter is an outspoken fiscal and social conservative that has riled up those opposed to his views.

They’re willing to waste $500,000 of YOUR TAXPAYER money on a special recall election when Peotter is already on the ballot next year.

I firmly believe that in these times of political correctness that Peotter has the right to express his views – that’s free speech.

Even the intellectual elite and Yale seem to agree.

The extreme left desires that only politically correct speech (as long as it fits into their very limited socialist narrative) should be protected. They erroneously believe this self relegated pseudo right trumps our Constitutionally protected free speech right for all (which is inherently offensive to those who may disagree or have opposing view points). This is not how our Constitutional Republic was designed to function….everyone gets a voice…..whether you wish to agree, like, dislike, or oppose those voices; it should be an individual decision/choice to listen or to validate those voices in a functional democracy.

When our society stifles free speech, it truly stifles the very principles that have made our country great, and the foundational bedrock of which our nation was founded upon. When we allow one segment of our society to place limits on free speech is all it’s forms against those those they may disdain or disagree with; then we are in essence limiting free speech for everyone. The Leftist (safe space generation) should be very careful what they wish for; because the historical pendulum always swings back in the opposite direction over time. By then it will be far to late to cry wolf….then only the voices of the ruling overlords & tyranny will be heard reverberating across this land.

The liberals have a habit of supporting protected speech only when it favors their selected agendas. Otherwise they don’t need no stinking protected speech or freedom of expression.
