Voice of OC’s visionary partnership with the Chapman University Journalism Department was recognized as one of Chapman University’s Top Employers for 2024 at last week’s State of the University address.
“This award is a testament to your organization’s commitment to recruiting and retaining top Chapman student and alumni talent — what we call “Thinking Chapman First.” Thank you and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition,” wrote Jennifer Kim, Associate Vice President Office of Career and Professional Development Chapman University in an email to Voice of OC.
Through this unique partnership, students are able to report out real-time city coverage and work on long term investigations, getting published while still in the classroom. They often partner with Voice of OC’s full time staff reporters and get edited by our award winning Publisher and Editor and Chief, Norberto Santana, Jr.
The student-led investigation, Unheard: Orange County Shuts Out Deaf Residents From Public Meeting Broadcasts, was honored last year with a nomination for the 65th Annual LA Press Club Awards. Chapman University graduate, Angelina Hicks, nabbed a second place prize from the Orange County Press Club for her story, What Are Orange County Cities Doing to Prepare for Climate Change?.
“Chapman students are doing visionary work in our newsroom and making a real difference across Orange County communities on a constant basis,” said Santana. “It’s a credit to the great education and support these students are getting at Chapman. We’re super lucky to be able to recruit from such a wonderful local educational institution and offer so many internship and learning opportunities.”
