In Tuesday’s primary election, Irvine voters decided on a charter amendment that would add two extra city council members and create six districts in the city for elections moving forward.

61% of voters cast “Yes” ballots, according to 9:30 p.m. results from the OC Registrar of Voters.

So far, 24,228 votes have been counted, with 39% of voters having voted “No” against the measure.

Irvine has previously elected council members using an at-large system. In these elections, residents can vote for as many candidates as open seats.

If approved, this measure would change the city to a by-district election system. That means voters would only be able to vote for one council member who is running in the district that they live in.

There would also be six council members representing each of the six districts. All Irvine residents would still be able to vote for the mayor.
