OCTA to Fully Transition to Wave Payment System on Friday, Ending Use of Paper Passes

OCTA to Fully Transition to Wave Payment System on Friday, Ending Use of Paper Passes

The gradual phase out of magnetic-stripe paper passes takes effect on May 1; cash with exact change will still be accepted on board OC Buses

ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority is reminding riders that OC Bus is fully transitioning to the new Wave fare payment system and magnetic-stripe paper passes will no longer be accepted onboard buses as of Friday (May 1).

The transition is part of OCTA’s ongoing efforts to modernize how customers pay for transit, creating a more secure, reliable and seamless payment experience. The sale of paper passes ended months ago and OCTA has been actively communicating with riders to ensure they are aware of the change.

Wave replaces traditional paper passes with a more convenient and flexible way to pay, including a reloadable Wave card, mobile app, and contactless payment options. The system is designed to streamline boarding and includes fare capping, ensuring riders always receive the best value without needing to pre-purchase passes.

Riders may continue to pay on board using cash with exact change only, as bus operators and fareboxes cannot provide change. Monthly paper passes that have already been activated also will continue to be accepted through May. Those boarding a bus can also pay with a debit or credit card or with Apple Pay or Google Pay for a seamless boarding experience. 

Riders are encouraged to make the switch to Wave to take advantage of added benefits such as fare capping, balance protection, easier account management, and expanded retail locations to purchase and reload cards throughout Orange County.

OC Bus averages 110,000 daily riders, reflecting a return to pre-pandemic levels. Service has been gradually restored to meet that demand. 

This transition to the Wave fare payment supports OCTA’s broader commitment to improving efficiency and enhancing the customer experience while keeping Orange County moving.
