A Costa Mesa employee — who was on the city’s layoff list — jumped to his death from the roof of City Hall this afternoon.

The 29-year-old maintenance worker had been with the city for more than four years, according to a report in the Orange County Register. Costa Mesa Police have confirmed the suicide, but have not released the man’s name, pending notification of next of kin.

Two witnesses saw him jump at 3:20 p.m. and tried in vain to save him, according to the Register story. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

More details to come.
