Kenneth E. Bell, M.D. is presently the head of Dr. Ken Bell & Associates, a Health Care Consulting Group.
Among their clients is The Coalition of Orange County Community Clinics, a group of seventeen Community Clinics serving the uninsured and underinsured in Orange County.
Prior to that, for 5 years Dr. Bell served as Chief Medical Officer of CalOptima, a MediCal Managed Care program which oversees care to 300,000 of our most vulnerable citizens.
Before his tenure at CalOptima, he worked for 14 years as Kaiser Permanente’s Medical Director in Orange County. He joined Kaiser Permanente in 1968 as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist and later became the Chief of that department.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group for 24 years. He graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Kings County Hospital, in New York. He attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School and the Kaiser Permanente Executive Program at Stanford University, School of Business.
In addition to his current position as Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Bell is a Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine.
Prior to that, he was a Clinical faculty member at the University of New York, Down State Medical Center, the University of Utah, UCLA and USC, as well as Adjunct Professor of Nursing at Cal State Los Angeles.
He is also active in community affairs, working on boards and committees of various nonprofit organizations. Dr. Bell is the recipient of numerous awards including the Orange County March of Dimes 1997 Mentor in Medicine award, The Southern California Permanente Medical Group 2001 Physician’s Exceptional Contribution Award, and the 2002 Orange County Medical Association Physician of the Year.
Dr. Bell has extensive experience in managed care and health care delivery, both as an operating administrator and as a nationwide consultant having consulted for Group Health of Puget Sound, Harvard Community Health Plan and Kaiser Permanente throughout the country.
He is nationally recognized for his work in promoting women’s health issues including family centered obstetrical care and the use of nurse midwives. Dr. Bell also serves as a Delegate to the California Medical Association. He has lectured widely on managed care, women’s health issues and health care for the uninsured.
