Garden Grove, CA – Congresswoman Judy Chu announced her support of Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen’s campaign for Congress today. Support from Chu, who is known as one of California’s most progressive Members of Congress, gives Nguyen’s campaign added momentum as the open-seat race for California’s 46th District begins to heat up.

In announcing her endorsement, Chu stated:

“Mayor Bao Nguyen has the experience, passion, and work ethic needed to be an effective advocate for Orange County in Congress. Bao is a true progressive, and his personal story is one that reflects the values of our Democratic Party. I am excited to announce my endorsement of Bao Nguyen, and I urge you to join me in supporting his campaign.”

Prior to her election to Congress in 2009, Chu served as the Chair of the California Board of Equalization. She had previously served on the Garvey School District Board of Education, the Monterey Park City Council, and in the California State Assembly.

Born in a UN refugee camp, Bao and his parents emigrated to the United States to escape oppression in communist Vietnam. He grew up in the 46th district and attended public schools in Anaheim, Orange and Garden Grove. After receiving a Bachelor’s degree from UC Irvine and a Master’s degree from Naropa University, Bao came back to Garden Grove to teach.

Bao was elected Mayor of Garden Grove in 2014. Upon his swearing-in, he became the first directly-elected Vietnamese American Democratic Mayor in the United States. He is the city’s first Vietnamese American and first openly LGBTQ Mayor. Prior to his historic election, he served as member of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education.
