COSTA MESA FIRST ENDORSES FAIRVIEW PARK INITIATIVE

Fairview Park Preservation Alliance’s initiative gives residents right to vote on changes to Fairview Park

(COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA) – February 29, 2016 – Costa Mesa First announced its support for the Fairview Park Preservation Alliance’s initiative, the “Initiative Requiring Changes in Use at Fairview Park be Subject to Voter Approval,” as it is the only solution that will protect the 208 acre park from any expansion or intensification of uses.

“The Fairview Park initiative will preserve the park as open and natural space for present and future generations,” said Rick Huffman, Treasurer of Costa Mesa First.

The Fairview Park initiative would require voter approval each time the City authorizes not only the expansion or intensification of uses, but also other changes. For example: new and/or expanded amenities, enlarging parking lots, and installation of lighting or utility delivery systems.

For years there has been pressure to make improvements that urbanize the park. Last year the City studied a proposal to make alterations to the east side of the park. However, there is overwhelming support by residents to preserve the park in a natural condition. For that reason, the initiative exempts from its voting requirement the restoration of Fairview Park to a natural undeveloped state, activities to protect the park and maintenance activities.

Costa Mesa First believes that Fairview Park is an important part of the City’s Open Space and Recreation Element of the General Plan. Providing natural open space for residents in a city with high-density housing is a crucial reason for preserving Fairview Park. Costa Mesa First supports the Fairview Park initiative because it believes the residents of Costa Mesa should have a voice in any significant changes to the park.
