Santa Ana, CA – National Nurses United (NNU) and the California Nurses Association came together today to endorse Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen in his bid for Congress.  NNU is the nation’s largest organization of registered nurses, giving Nguyen a significant boost in support from a key constituency who also want to see healthcare, worker’s rights, and women’s rights expanded.

“California’s registered nurses are proud to endorse Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen, a former substitute teacher, community organizer, and school board member who has made serving the public interest his priority,” said Shella Soriano, RN, and a local leader of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United.  “For demanding improved Medicare for all, advocating for school funding, ensuring accountable government, and pushing back on corporations that put our community and our environment at risk, Bao has demonstrated that he will be a champion for the people of Orange County – our jobs, our families, and our health.”

Mayor Nguyen was thankful, and said he’ll continue to fight for healthcare and health workers.

“The fight for universal healthcare is not over. While the Affordable Care Act certainly has helped in many respects, millions of Americans remain uninsured. I plan to build off the successes of Obamacare, and fight to expand healthcare until every last American family has the resources they need to keep themselves and their children healthy.” Bao also praised nurses for their work, saying, “The nurses who care for our families are on the front lines, keeping Americans healthy. I’m proud to have their support, and in Congress, I’ll make sure they have the resources they need to do their jobs.”

Brought to the United States by his parents as a child, Bao Nguyen was elected Mayor of Garden Grove in 2014, where he has increased government transparency and fought corruption. Upon his swearing-in, he became the first directly- elected Vietnamese American Democratic Mayor in the United States. He is the city’s first Vietnamese American and first Openly LGBTQ Mayor. Prior to his historic election, he served as member of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education.
