California Life Sciences Association Honors Congressman Tony Cárdenas and Congresswoman Mimi Walters for Commitment to Advancing Life Sciences Innovation

California Legislators Named 2016 Visionary Award Winners

San Francisco and San Diego – California Life Sciences Association (CLSA), the nation’s largest statewide life sciences public policy, advocacy and business solutions organization, today announced Representatives Tony Cárdenas (D-San Fernando Valley) and Mimi Walters (R-Irvine) as the recipients of the 2016 Visionary Awards, presented at CLSA’s annual Washington, D.C. program held at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

The 2016 Visionary Awards were presented by CLSA President and CEO Sara Radcliffe, in recognition of the leadership of Cárdenas and Walters and their efforts to promote sound policies for advancing life sciences research, investment and innovation. The Visionary Awards program was held this week and was attended by nearly 150 leaders in the life sciences, public policy and patient advocacy communities.

“Congressman Cárdenas and Congresswoman Walters are proven champions for California’s world-leading life sciences sector,” said Sara Radcliffe, President & CEO, California Life Sciences Association (CLSA). “They have distinguished themselves through their principled and thoughtful leadership of policies to advance life sciences research, investment and innovation. We are proud to present them with CLSA’s 2016 Visionary Awards for their continued efforts to bolster the life sciences sector, which employs nearly 300,000 Californians in pursuit of new medicines and technologies that improve and save lives around the world.”

Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-San Fernando Valley), California’s 29th Congressional District: “I am humbled to receive the Visionary Award from the California Life Sciences Association (CLSA). One of my main goals in Congress has always been to advance policies that create good-paying jobs in California and bring better treatment to patients in need. CLSA has been a great partner on this forefront. Our federal government has an important role in supporting life sciences research and innovation. I look forward to continuing working with CLSA to help ensure our communities get access to life-saving medicines and technologies.”

Congresswoman Mimi Walters (R-Irvine), California’s 45th Congressional District: “I am grateful to receive the California Life Sciences Association (CLSA)’s Visionary Award. This is a powerful reminder of how our district’s work is adding to the growth and development of life sciences research and innovation. Orange County’s life sciences community has become one of the primary drivers of economic growth in the state and across the nation and is responsible for more than $35.3 billion in annual economic activity in biotech, pharmaceutical science and medical devices.”

Past award recipients include: House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield), Representatives Anna G. Eshoo (D-Silicon Valley), Scott Peters (D-San Diego), Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena), Fred Upton (R-Mich.), David Valadao (R-Hanford) and others.
