For Immediate Release
June 2, 2016

Santa Ana, CA – Dr. George West, President of the Board of Education for Garden Grove Unified School District, announced his endorsement for Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen’s bid for Congress. Dr. West and Bao Nguyen worked together on the school board from 2011 to 2014 when Nguyen was also on the school board prior to becoming mayor.
School Board President West said the following in support of Mayor Bao Nguyen:
The Mayor’s commitment to education in Orange County is unrivaled. Having worked directly with him over the years, Bao clearly believes that the greatest investment we can make is in our children. With his vision, we accomplished a great deal on the School Board, including our work to create the district’s first bilingual programs in Spanish and Vietnamese. Creative solutions like these are what we need in Congress when it comes to supporting our students. That’s why I’m proud to endorse Bao Nguyen.
Mayor Nguyen thanked Dr. West, and said he was committed to making education a top priority in Congress:
California’s public education system is not adequate, and it’s not the teachers’ fault. The simple fact is that Washington doesn’t prioritize our children or our teachers. But when I’m in Congress, I’ll ensure that we invest in our public schools, including K-12, community colleges, and public universities. Our kids want to learn, but the federal government is crippling their ability to do so. We need to stop the practice of profiting off of kids who are trying to go to college, because young people entering the workforce shouldn’t be bogged down with debt. We need more STEM programs, and we need more K-12 bilingual programs like what we created in GGUSD, because our children should be equipped with the tools they need to compete in today’s and tomorrow’seconomy.
Mayor Nguyen served on the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education from 2011 to 2014. Brought to the United States by his parents as a child, Bao Nguyen was elected Mayor of Garden Grove in 2014, where he has increased government transparency and fought corruption. Upon his swearing-in, he became the first directly- elected Vietnamese American Democratic Mayor in the United States. He is the city’s first Vietnamese American and first Openly LGBTQ Mayor.
