Placentia-Yorba Linda students benefit from wide variety of summer education programs
In partnership with California State University, Fullerton, a tuition-free English language development (ELD) Integrated Science Camp for 450 English learner and McKinney-Vento students in third through fifth grade provides a fully integrated science, art and English language arts education. This year’s program is built around a rainforest theme, and takes place at three district elementary schools: Melrose, Rio Vista and Topaz.
Additionally, a five-week elementary Enrichment Summer School for Preppy K (transitional kindergarten) through seventh grade is being held at Fairmont Elementary School. This is the first year that enrollment includes 100 qualifying McKinney-Vento students on full scholarships. In addition to the 493 elementary students involved, 74 high school students are serving as teacher aides.
For middle school students, PYLUSD is offering an AVID Algebra Bridge class at Valencia High School for 20 students, an Accelerated Math 7/8 class at Esperanza High School for 71 students, and an AVID Excel class in August for an estimated 75 students. All three courses are designed to prepare incoming students for the next year’s curriculum, as well as bolster existing skills.
For high schoolers with impacted schedules, the district has several programs to help. A PYLUSD Summer Program for Impacted Schedules for 150 students at Esperanza High School features the Apex online curriculum, and includes graduation requirements in math, social studies, academic studies, career planning and health. Eighty students are enrolled in Art Fundamentals at La Entrada High School, which allows incoming seniors with full schedules the opportunity to take their art class over the summer in order to complete other classes throughout the regular school year. And VHS Apex is a class for 200 students at Valencia High School for incoming freshman with impacted schedules who are attempting to take health, academic skills and career planning before they begin their high school careers.
Finally, nearly 700 special needs preschool through adult transition students are participating in this summer’s Extended School Year (ESY) programs at George Key School, Esperanza High School, and Mabel Paine and Tynes elementary schools. These classes are offered to students in the district’s moderate to severe programs who require intensive interventions to maintain their learning.
“We are very excited about our programs this summer,” said PYLUSD Director of Alternative Education Carrie Bisgard. “We have great experiences available for students to develop a wide variety of skills and have a lot of fun too!”
PYLUSD is pleased to offer these advantageous summer programs to the students in the community. These opportunities align with the district’s core values of excellence, collaboration, integrity and innovation.
