How Would You Build Better Public Transit in Orange County?
Survey gives residents ability to show their vision for the future of local public transit
ORANGE – Imagine being given the opportunity to single-handedly plan the future of Orange County’s public transit system.
That’s the challenge being provided through an interactive online planning tool that the public is invited to complete at OCTransitVision.com.
Through the survey, participants are given an imaginary budget of $100 and asked to use that budget to build their vision for the future of public transit, including bus and rail service, in Orange County.
They can choose which types of improvements to be made in the transit system and examine what benefits those transit enhancements would likely bring.
Options include adding faster bus service with fewer stops, adding more weekend service, increasing service areas or adding freeway express lanes. Participants then examine the potential benefits of their improvements, such as reduced travel times and better connections between various modes of transportation.
But prioritizing where to make improvements is key on the limited budget provided.
Participants can work with the online planning tool and reset their options repeatedly until they are satisfied with their vision, and then submit their suggestions.
The OCTransitVision planning tool is one of several opportunities for public input that will be included in the Transit Master Plan being developed by the Orange County Transportation Authority.
Public transit is expected to have an increasingly important role in Orange County as population and employment grows and room to continue expanding freeways and streets is limited.
The comprehensive Transit Master Plan will be a high-level look at the long-term transit needs of Orange County, identify major travel corridors where enhanced transportation options such as bus rapid transit, light rail and streetcars could help transport large numbers of people more efficiently.
The public’s ideas for providing the best transit options for the future of Orange County are essential to the success of the plan. The survey will be online through May 31.
The OCTA board of directors is scheduled to review the Transit Master Plan in late 2017 and recommend next steps.
