A new tax expansion enables readers like you to deduct donations contributed to nonprofits like Voice of OC.

The new change for 2021 gives a $300 per individual or $600 per couple filing jointly “above the line” deduction for cash charitable contributions.

That means if you don’t usually itemize on your taxes, you can still deduct cash you contribute to nonprofit newsrooms this year. Please note, there was a smaller version of this provision for tax year 2020 — this is a new and expanded version for 2021, that was enacted in the end-of-year COVID-19 relief bill passed by Congress in December.

Donations made to Voice of OC help your bottom line, but they also go directly to creating real change here in Orange County.

  • Help us continue to uncover and report out where CARES Act funding is going in your county.
  • Join our effort to document the impacts of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations including the elderly, non-white communities, jail inmates and the homeless.
  • Every week we are bringing you stories ahead of the early week local government meetings. We’ve even started offering headlines every Saturday to give you more time to read the news and potentially chime in on city council agenda items.

Help us help you this year and consider taking advantage of this new tax provision by becoming a donor. Your valued recurring gift will help us keep telling the stories that matter to you.
