That 37 people died “without fixed abode” in OC in May represents a spike in the number of homeless deaths as compared to previous months and the month of May in previous years. The significance (or lack thereof) of this bump will become clear in the coming months.
Otherwise, this will be the last time I will be writing this column as pastor of St. Philip Benizi Parish. Always a parish of the Diocese of Orange, my religious order, the Servants of Mary, will be transitioning out of St. Philip Benizi parish effective July 1st. The Diocese will be taking responsibility for its operation henceforth.
I myself will be starting work right after the Fourth of July holiday for a statewide homeless provider named NHHA (National Health Care and Housing Advisors), which is headquartered in Santa Ana, operates recuperative care facilities in Long Beach, Sacramento, and the Imperial Valley for seniors and those suffering from disabilities who are transitioning from street homelessness.
In my years at St. Philip Benizi, the seniors and those suffering from disabilities who find themselves sleeping on the streets were among the painful cases to see. So it will be nice to be working with these folks, none of whom deserve to be sleeping on the streets.
I plan to continue this column here in OC and to indeed write similarly in the counties where NHHA operates. So the project continues …
Fr. Dennis Kriz, OSM, Pastor St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, Fullerton.
