The Irvine City Council voted to tell the Orange County Fire Authority it may withdraw from the agency, part of a long-running dispute between Irvine and the Fire Authority over the city’s disproportionately large property tax contributions compared to the services it receives.
The son of former Garden Grove Mayor Bruce Broadwater, who is at the center of the city’s nepotism scandal, has been on leave from his job as firefighter with workers’ compensation benefits since July.
The Orange County District Attorney’s office is taking legal action against the city of Garden Grove over “alleged Brown Act violations and other possible criminal misconduct” related to the hiring of the former mayor’s son as a firefighter and a secret employment deal with its former fire chief.
He once said he disapproved of his son’s hiring by the fire department and vowed to change the city’s nepotism policy. But now Mayor Bruce Broadwater won’t comment on reports of his son’s poor job performance.
