They live just a few miles from Huntington Beach’s iconic pier, but many children in the city’s low-income Oak View neighborhood have no experience in the ocean. A program, dubbed Reach Beyond the Beach, gives them a chance to learn the lessons of lifeguards.
While crime rates are spiking countrywide, they are going the opposite direction in Huntington Beach’s historically underserved Oak View neighborhood. The Oak View Renewal Partnership deserves much of the credit.
A variety of initiatives — including affordable housing developments and appeals to landlords for better upkeep and oversight — are aimed at improving the living conditions of the county’s low-income residents.
